What is Pressure-Volume work?
A second law of thermodynamics states that changes in internal energy cannot occur without an equal amount of work.
In a closed system, pressure and volume are related, in that when a system's volume changes, the pressure of the system can also change, and vice versa.
Therefore, we can say that an increase in the volume of a system will result in an increase in pressure.
An increase in pressure will result in work being done on the system.
A familiar example of this is when we blow up a balloon. We use the work done by the air in moving the balloon to change the volume of air in the balloon, thereby increasing the pressure of the air.
We can also decrease the volume of air in a balloon (or other container) by drawing air in through a hole. At that point, the volume inside the balloon or container will be smaller than its original volume, and the pressure within the container will be higher.
Therefore, in terms of first law of thermodynamics, we can say that we have done work on the air in the balloon in order to make it bigger.
In a closed system (where work cannot be taken out of the system), we say that we have done work on the system and the system has done work on us to make itself bigger.
In other words, the system is using work to change its volume. In the present case, the container changes its volume by absorbing the gas.
Before we do PV Work, let's study about the work done by a system.
Work done by a system
Any external force applied to a system can do work on the system. External forces include pressures (as will be discussed later), temperature differences, etc.
Note that the force may be constant (such as gravity) or changing (as is the case of the force of a falling object).
The work that is done by a system as a result of an external force being applied to it is given by
where V is the system's volume, F is the external force, and m is the system's mass.
For example, if we want to do work on a system by moving it from point A to point B, then we can do this by applying a force F between those two points. In the case that F is a constant pressure, the work will be proportional to the distance x that the object moves.
