The power of Photoshop comes from the fact that the software offers nearly an unlimited number of ways to create images. If you know how to edit and arrange the elements within Photoshop, you can master any type of image you may require.
In this chapter, I provide an overview of some of the tools you use to create images in Photoshop. To me, this is the most important part of learning the software. I also give you a look at the elements that are used to construct images in Photoshop, and I point out how you can use the tools to manipulate these elements.
## Peeling Back the Layers
Photoshop offers several layers of image editing in a single document. You can start with a few basic layers — for example, a plain white canvas. This method works well for simple designs that don't have too many elements.
But what if you need a complex design? Take a look at Figure 2-1. First, I created a white canvas and added a few basic elements, including a textured rectangle and a rough-looking shape with rounded corners. I left the rectangular layer on top of the layer with the rounded shapes because I wanted to overlay a thin blue rectangle on top of the rounded objects.
Photoshop has many layers, including the following:
  * A _Background_ layer in front of any other layers.
  * A _Layer 1_ layer beneath any other layers.
  * A _Layer 2_ layer beneath any other layers.
