🚨 The State of the Public Health Workforce 🚨

In 2021, the de Beaumont Foundation and the Public Health National Center for Innovations published alarming research that shed light on the staffing crisis facing the public health workforce. According to the research brief, "Staffing Up: Workforce Levels Needed to Provide Basic Public Health Services for All Americans," state and local health departments need an additional 80,000 full-time employees to deliver minimum public health services in their communities.

During a session on the state of state and local public health infrastructure, finance, practice, and workforce, Jonathan P. Leider of the University of Minnesota discussed the progression of the Staffing Up initiative, which now includes a calculator to help individual agencies determine the amount of money necessary to carry out the Foundational Public Health Services. And thanks to new data fielded by the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO), researchers will be able to better understand agencies' current needs. "What we can start to see is that people don't have what they need," Leider said. "There's still more that needs to be done."
