This article outlines how strategies for recovery are conceptualized in applied linguistics as a bridge to connect language-and-society-oriented studies and the mainstream of cognitive linguistic research. The article then describes how research on strategies for recovery conducted within an applied linguistics framework has contributed to insights into the organisation of conceptualisations about strategies for recovery. Four empirical studies are then presented, each based on an analysis of language-therapist discourse. The first two focus on strategies for recovery from the clients' perspective, the third on strategies for recovery from the perspective of the language therapist, and the fourth on strategies for recovery from the perspective of the person with aphasia. The theoretical contribution of the studies consists of the conceptualization of strategies for recovery within applied linguistics as a form of adaptation. The theoretical contribution is based on the logic of multiple conceptualizations, which shows that the integration of the perspective of both client and therapist can be conceived as a key step in the development of an adapted concept for the representation of strategies for recovery.
