Quick Fringe is a software tool that uses pattern recognition to convert an image into a set of numerical estimates.
 The Quick Fringe pattern recognition algorithm provides estimates of the target's center of rotation and several orthogonal axis of rotation.
 The results are typically within one to five degrees, but the precision depends on the accuracy of the input image.
 The results are useful as a first pass of validation of the validity of the measured position, angle, and orientation of an interferometer.  
Quick Fringe requires that input images are binned by an integer number of pixels. 
This allows comparison of the performance of different interpolation routines.  
 Binning by two or four pixels improves the accuracy by a factor of 10. 
 For example, testing Quick Fringe on images binned by 16 pixels gave a quadratic error,  
while testing on images binned by 32 pixels gave a cubic error.
 Quick Fringe provides a highly-accurate estimate of the target's optical center,
 and a highly-accurate estimate of the orientation of the major axis of rotation,
 as well as excellent estimates of the target's rotation angle
 and the error of the rotation angle
 For six degrees-of-freedom, Quick Fringe generally provides results within  
one to five degrees
 of the true values.
 The estimated RMS error of an axis of rotation is one to three pixels.
 The estimated RMS error of a rotation angle is one degree
 for axis angles between 0 and  
degrees, and less than three degrees when the axis angle exceeds degrees.
 The estimated RMS error of the rotation angle is one to five degrees.
 Quick Fringe is intended to be used as a first pass of validation.  
 The values returned are not sufficient for detailed analysis.
As of the latest release (1.07), Quick Fringe supports optical interferometers by name (e.g., “XAO1”) and also supports standard GRP format files from commercial image grabbing hardware.
Quick Fringe uses the Harris operator as a basic implementation of the local maximum operator.  
Aperture masking allowed Quick Fringe to reject non-pupil images (e.g., from an off-axis telescope element or telescope camera)
 and to provide a preliminary estimate of the rotation angle.

Quick Fringe is designed for and most useful in a number of interferometry fields, including:
Calibration:
Interferometer calibration is often performed with a plane mirror. A plane mirror interacts like a point source, and will interfere with itself. However, the best theoretical solution for the plane mirror is a very thin mirror in the Fraunhofer diffraction pattern of the plane mirror. This is not an exact diffraction pattern, but is a good approximation.  
Quick Fringe has been used to quantify and determine the accuracy of such mirror calibrations. This is performed by using a custom made field-programmable gate array (FPGA) to perform a lookup-table based Fourier Transform on a 1024 by 1024 pixel image of a fringe pattern generated by a single calibration mirror. This Fourier transform is computed on a 1024 by 1024 pixel image of a fringe pattern generated by multiple mirrors. The FFT length may be any length less than the Nyquist frequency, but a 2048 by 2048 pixel image is the recommended minimum for accurate results.
