Structure and meaning in the short story, Victorian writer and reader, and The Nation and the plot. Linda Cooper has often used this device. However, to achieve a truly memorable effect, some knowledge of the author and his time is needed. For example, George Orwell's poignant account of a young boy's visit to London in Search of a Cloud (1947) is entirely convincing because the author had been to London and was familiar with the scene of its making. Such a novel may not be readable to a complete novice.
The popular film (1987) The Last of the Mohicans contains a number of later sections that were added by the scriptwriter after filming. This required the filmmaker to reshape the source material, thus explaining some of the differences in the final product. Thus, such later additions may not have been as easy to add as one might imagine.
Even an experienced author may not be able to add such elements into a piece of fiction without losing authenticity. For example, the famous Russian playwright and screenwriter Anton Chekhov couldn't find a publisher for The Three Sisters until he could complete the third act.
