Saving Our Girls

African Americans have been wringing their hands about the plight of boys forever -- to the point of declaring them an endangered species. It turns out that Black girls are increasingly being endangered, too. Black girls are being subjected to disproportionately high disciplinary rates and other threats to their self-esteem, their physical well-being and their future. “We are in a battle for the souls of Black girls,” Monique W. Morris, the executive director of Grantmakers for Girls of Color, told the New York Times, below. Morris also wrote a book that delves into the issue, “Pushout: The Criminalization of Black Girls in School.”
