Exploring the Solar System in 3D with
the PlanetWerks widget
The PlanetWerks widget brings the beauty of our solar system to you in a new way.
It's a three dimensional tour through our solar system.
You can adjust the view as you like, using the slider at the bottom of the page.
Changes to the 3D planet are reflected in the widget as soon as you change them.
Make sure to do some research on the planets, because the widget will teach you more than you can imagine.
By using "Search planet" you can start your search from the centre and navigate throughout the solar system.
If you know the name of a planet, you can enter it in the search box.
Then the planet will be added to your list, and its size adjusted to fit the widget.
If you click on a planet, the widget displays various info and facts about that planet.

It will appear at the bottom of the list.
To your right you see the PlanetWerks logo in blue.
This tells you where you are in the solar system.
And if you have saved your current position, it will also tell you where you are.

Good Afternoon,
Most of you probably know about the enormous heat the Sun gives off. The solar wind is actually pretty strong. If you're lucky enough to live on the Earth, you won't lose any of your hair (don't worry, I'm kidding).
But suppose you're on a planet in the outer solar system. Life there is hard. At some point, you might have to leave.
If you have a Stargate in the backyard, you could choose to go home. But if you don't, how can you leave? Actually, it's not too hard. You do have to make sure you know your way back, but it's do-able.
The sun is a ball of burning gas about 600 million miles wide. [1] The Sun's gravity is so powerful that it's practically impossible for anything to fall past about 5 astronomical units (about 14.5 billion miles.)
And this means you have a lot of space to move around in. Once you've gotten beyond about 5 astronomical units, what you're doing is the same as if you were on the far side of the Earth, but at five times the distance.
Suppose you're on a planet in the outer solar system. Your gravity is much weaker than the Sun's (by comparison). It would be like being on the Moon, or maybe even Earth. If you could get to about 8 astronomical units, you'd be safe.
To fly away, you need a rocket. You'd need a big one. For my purposes, let's say it's about 10 times the size of a rock (that's what I call big.) If you use something like the stargate, you'll probably need to build a big one. [2]
