In 2001 I was the chief editor of a major test series for the National Center for Testing and Evaluation (NCTE). That was when I met Pat Ceballos, a Texas native who had just arrived at NCTE from elsewhere. Pat was developing an oral interpretation curriculum for American Sign Language (ASL). At the time, I was working on the development of a new test series for deaf children called the Early Literacy Skills Test (ELLST). We became fast friends, and then, a few years later, we became coworkers. (His dream job: working with deaf people and signing!)
We continued working together, and he joined the staff of the National Center for Deaf-Blind Education. I later left NCTE and worked with the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association as executive director of Standards Development. The last time we worked together was in 2010, when Pat came to me with a proposal to produce a book on an idea he’d been mulling over: to write a book that would teach signers to speak American English.
Of course, American Sign Language is spoken English. And, as he pointed out, a lot of signers are native speakers of English. He wrote his first draft of the book in his spare time. Then I joined him on a project that involved me writing and Pat producing a major overhaul of the book, which was published last month by the national association for the deaf. I thought we’d write the book for the deaf, but we knew it would be useful for everyone.
Pat’s theory was that when the deaf and hearing mix, everyone winds up speaking like the hearing: and there are a lot of things in American Sign Language that help make us sound like we don’t use American English. And just as the signs for colors sound different from American English, so do the signs for numbers and the signs for syntax and grammar. All of these things make signers sound like people who use American English—but it’s not because of some biological characteristic of signers. It’s because signers speak American English, just as everyone else does.
