The game was released in North America on November 18, 2006, and was the first video game published by LucasArts since 2006, when the company had gone bankrupt.
The game, set in the Vietnam War, follows Mercy and her CIA partner "War", who is in Vietnam to disrupt a North Vietnamese drug smuggling operation. The player has the option to complete missions in a variety of settings, such as jungles and seashores, and takes control of numerous characters, including the protagonist, Mercy, War, and others.
Development of the game began in 2005, following a request by publisher LucasArts for a game to be released in 2006, following the company's financial issues in mid-2005. The game was developed by Pandemic Studios, a development studio based in Montreal, Quebec, with a team of around 50 people, with one lead programmer having been the lead programmer for the Call of Duty series. Music was composed by Grant Kirkhope, with voice-overs by Tom Kenny, and Lucy O'Brien. The game was released for the PlayStation 2 and Xbox  in North America on November 18, 2006. On June 6, 2007, Pandemic announced that the Xbox version was cancelled. In 2008, the game received generally positive reviews, with praise for the graphics and for its missions and gameplay. However, it was criticized for its high difficulty level. A sequel, titled Mercenaries 2: World in Flames, was released in 2008.
Gameplay
Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction is an action-adventure game with elements of stealth, set in the Vietnam War. The player takes control of an agent of the United States Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) who is dropped in the middle of the conflict, as a secondary character named "War". The player has the option to complete the game in 60 minutes or less, and if it is completed in that time, the player is rewarded with a high-end firearm. Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction can be played as either a single-player game or a multiplayer game, or both. The single-player game features ten missions, and the multiplayer mode allows for up to six players to play simultaneously.
