A new project to identify and tag veterans from Nova Scotia is facing questions about whether an omission in the project will prevent them from receiving the proper recognition they deserve.
The project is called Nova Scotia's Undiscovered Heroes. It was launched by the province's Ministry of Veteran's Affairs (MVA) last month, with former cabinet minister Darryl MacDonald, who served in the military for 15 years, as its honouree.
The province is recruiting people who were born between 1980 and 1995 who have not been identified as "unfound" or living at home without a recent address.
The idea is to find them and connect them with their families — but the province hasn't indicated if it has previously identified family members living in out of province.
The MVA said the project will last about a year, and the province said the goal is to make "an active effort to ensure veterans and their families receive the respect, gratitude and support they deserve," in hopes of closing out the project by 2021.
'It seems like an oxymoron'
Meanwhile, veterans groups and service organizations have raised questions about the project.
Kris Parsons is the national vice-president of the Royal Canadian Legion, and an advocate for veterans.
