I want to write a function that safely can be executed from multiple threads.

The thread-safe function should only be called once from a thread in which it was created.
Of course, it cannot be executed from any other thread or even from the same thread in which it was created.
It also cannot be directly called from the main thread (because of the way my application works).
The function needs to be called from the UI thread in which a "Begin" button is pressed, and it will return a unique ID to which a MessageBox can be displayed.
If the user presses "OK", the MessageBox will be dismissed, otherwise, the thread will be aborted (as there was a valid ID returned).
It's important that the returned value be a unique value that will never be reused (but it does not need to be deterministic, like the current millisecond timestamp).
