Failure of a cluster cooling system in the heat is a major welfare concern for dairy cows. One method of preventing calf mortality is to reduce heat stress in the cow by keeping the cow cool during a failure. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a primary cooling system for keeping cows cool. The hypothesis was that adding a secondary water-perfused cooling system to the primary system would keep cows cool during a failure. Eight pregnant Holstein cows in the last month of gestation were housed in a cow shelter with a constant temperature of 22 degrees C and natural lighting. The cows were fitted with an 11-demperature logger, and air velocity was measured using an anemometer. In experiment 1, the primary cooling system failed at 8.30 h (16% humidity, 20 degrees C air temperature, 0.7 wind speed), and cows were transferred to a separate refuge. One cow was fitted with an additional cooling device (e.g., water perfusion) inside a canister, and another was allowed to naturally cool with the air temperature rapidly increasing to about 40 degrees C. In experiment 2, the primary cooling system failed at 11.30 h (20% humidity, 25 degrees C air temperature, 0.9 wind speed), and cows were transferred to the refuge. In both experiments, the cows were equally well-hydrated. In experiment 1, the air temperature inside the refuge was not affected by the failure of the primary cooling system. In contrast, in experiment 2, the cow temperature increased to over 35 degrees C in about half an hour, and the air temperature increased from 20 to 40 degrees C. The increase in cow temperature was lower for cows with a perfused cooling device, suggesting the perfused cooling device was cooling the cow. However, the effectiveness of the perfused cooling device was not estimated because the number of cows with a perfused cooling device was only 2 of 8. These results suggest that adding a back-up cooling system to the primary cooling system in a cow shelter may be an effective method of preventing heat stress in dairy cows.
