The big news from yesterday and today, as it was announced that the infamous Malaysian Ringgit has hit the kraken, taking the 4 ringgit to an average of 6.06 on the day at present, with the BNM starting to sell it on the Singapore Exchange. This means that the official interest rate in Singapore will fall from 3.5% to 3.25% on October 13th and the BNM will have to step in and ensure that the rate does not become 5.0% or worse. The BOC (Bank of China) saw the greenback coming and put the yuan at a peg of 7.6 (similar to the 3 ringgit peg) and the Bank of Thailand followed suit with a 7.5 peg. As well, US Treasury debt fell into line, selling the first time in a year.
And, after the IMF backed out of the US debt ceiling talks last night, the US government put together a letter to the European governments and world leaders asking them to continue with economic support. The rationale is that the US has the best trade and investment relationships and it wants that maintained. However, the message appears to have been lost in the world of the headlines.
Aircraft manufacturers Boeing and Airbus enjoyed an impressive performance, with Boeing leading the way with a 16.4% gain, with Airbus gaining 17.4%.
Both banks were in positive territory with UBS gaining 2.2% and Credit Suisse +0.4%
Oil and gas stocks fell in sympathy with crude oil in the US, with the iShares MSCI North America Oil and Gas ETF (NYSEArca: OXY) falling 4.2%.
In spite of the rally in the South Korean won, the stock market is still off around 3% for the year, a bit less than at the start of the year.
For the week, FTSE 200 closed the week up 6.8%, S&P 500 up 5.3%, and Nasdaq up 4.3%. In contrast, the MSCI World is off 1.5%.
The volatility in US and European stocks is a factor. The Emerging Markets are much less volatile, so they are likely to continue to outperform.
The policy action in the US is strong and will continue. The market has been talking about the possibility of another rate hike on Thursday and that is likely to happen. In Europe, there will be a decision on Spain and Portugal on
