Category:ShoweringOver the past few years, we’ve had The Weeknd’s “Can’t Feel My Face,” Beyoncé’s “Formation,” and Kendrick Lamar’s “Swimming Pools (Drank).” Those songs showed artists’ willingness to test the limits of what hip-hop listeners have come to accept from the genre, and its current vanguard is Nicki Minaj. “Anaconda” is a post-R&B song full of playfulness, and it’s a reminder of how much fun this genre has been over the past few years.
The hook’s “this anaconda, let me eat you whole” gives way to what sounds like heavy, low-end drums that playfully peel away from Nicki’s voice. The original version had her breathy vocal delivery sounding more in line with what pop songs typically sound like, but these later versions show off her prowess as an R&B vocalist. The chorus that follows uses her full range and showcases the persona that Nicki has built through her lyrics and persona.
The video, meanwhile, is ridiculous. Featuring Nicki as a sexy, elephant-mouthed stripper, the song’s insistence on the stripper’s body is cartoonish, but it also ends up being what defines the song. And that’s what makes it so fun.
