The girl
Agnes lives in a decaying, Gothic castle. She is barely 14, yet she is a woman. She likes to dress in men's clothes, and long hair, and séances, and drugs, and sleeping under the covers of her twin brother's bed.
Her only close companion is a dog called Duke. Duke is a female dog who wears a uniform. Agnes is not the only one who wears men's clothes. Many servants in the house wear men's clothing and act like men.
Agnes watches the new nurse slip a noose around the dog's neck. Agnes cannot believe she is doing this to her own pet. She decides to leave the sanitarium and go home.
This is no easy thing. There are miles of forest, and mud, and vicious spiders, and leeches, and bears. Yet she makes it, and is quickly reunited with her dog. She is soon in new trouble.
The young girl
Agnes' stepfather is the perfect villain. He is also her teacher and her guardian. She is often beaten for her unmanly conduct and her strange ways.
Her stepfather is planning her next "discipline". He says he will do anything to make Agnes love him. She does not have much love to give to anyone except for Duke and her pet rats. She knows that she can rely on Duke and her pet rats to save her. She makes a daring escape.
Meanwhile her stepfather is furious. He has chosen a country doctor to return to her home. He arrives there with his reputation on his side.
Agnes is at the mercy of her doctor. He is a well-known sadist, who is fond of "rescuing" wayward girls, and making them his slaves.
When Agnes is a little girl, she witnesses the kind old farmer's death. At the funeral, Agnes sees the corpse of a man from the old farmer's community. The farmer had many secrets. Agnes knew many 3125841983
