AutoCAD was originally developed as a block-based CAD program for drafting architectural drawings. The first release of AutoCAD was the "10.0" version which was released on December 15, 1982 on IBM PC compatible and Apple II computers. Prior to this release, architectural CAD programs ran on mainframe computers and a separate software suite was needed for each user. An IBM PC compatible was the first computer to be able to run AutoCAD, and it was the first to be widely used for CAD purposes.
The original release of AutoCAD had a number of unique features, most notably its ability to draw free-form 3D objects and its ability to view the object from any angle. This feature, known as parametric modeling, required a proprietary external graphics library known as the MacDraw graphics library. The MacDraw graphics library was licensed by Macromedia in 1994. Although MacDraw and AutoCAD are compatible, AutoCAD is based on the PostScript graphics library from Adobe.
In 1984, AutoCAD was released for Apple II computers and the first versions of the software were hard-coded to run on Apple II computers. In October 1984, AutoCAD was released for the first time on the Apple IIe computer. AutoCAD for Apple IIe was compatible with all versions of AutoCAD released before and after that point and the functionality of the Apple IIe software was at the same level as the Apple II software
