Overview

Historical and social development of the peoples of the northern caucasus followed different paths, although many general trends in socio-economic development and major historical transformations covered the areas of residence of all local groups. Some ethnic communities formed their own states in the early middle ages, while in others the role of the state was played by clans or unions of rural communities. At the same time, all mountaineers are united by a strong commitment to their clans and local customs.
