A key Tory donor has been found guilty of lying to parliament about the UK's dealings with Saudi Arabia, in what is a blow to Theresa May's hopes of wooing the kingdom into trade talks.
Andrew Bridgen, a MP who is chairman of the influential European Research Group of Brexiteer Tories, claimed he had never heard of a deal to sell arms to Saudi Arabia, when in fact he had.

He also told MPs he was unaware of a government plan to sell arms to the Saudi-led coalition fighting in Yemen, when the truth was he had been briefed on it.
Bridgen was found guilty of giving "false and misleading evidence" after Commons Leader Andrea Leadsom challenged him over his claims.
But the powerful Brexiteer from South Northamptonshire is now reported to be threatening to quit the Conservative party in a dispute over the justice bill.
In a letter to Mrs Leadsom, he warned: "I do not agree with the Chancellor's plan to change the Criminal Justice Act [CJA] and I am minded to resign as party chairman if he proceeds in this way."

A day after the verdict, the EU's ambassador to the UK Craig Gowan tweeted: "The story today that the EU ambassador in London has had to advise his HQ to desist from congratulating Bridgen on his acquittal in the Saudi vote is very interesting."
Bridgen had faced two separate charges, after giving conflicting evidence about three separate issues.
During a debate on foreign aid in January 2016, he told the Commons he had "never heard of any form of UK defence exports" to Saudi Arabia and that he "was not aware of any intention by the Government to sell arms to Saudi Arabia".
