This is a very welcome addition to the Canon EF lineup. It can be bought for around $500 with a lens hood. That makes it about as cheap as you can get, at least if you consider it is a fairly complete package. It is designed as a multi-format wide-angle lens and, if I’m not mistaken, it is one of the better wide-angle lenses out there. This is because it is not as soft and forgiving as the cheaper lenses that are currently available. And, it is not the least expensive, but also not the most expensive. With Canon’s new L line, Canon is just trying to get the best out of their “L” lenses. This 24-70 is no exception, and it is not a bad performer.
Out of the box the lens performs well in all but one area. At the widest focal length it does not have the bokeh or the contrast of the current Canon L 24-70. However, it does render the kind of bokeh that the current 24-70L II does not. On the other hand, the 24-70 does not have the wide aperture control of the 24-70L II. If you shoot mostly indoors, then the 24-70 will be a very good choice for you, as it will keep its value and keep it good from f/2.8 to f/5.6. Otherwise, the new 24-70 f/2.8L is a great choice, as it can be had for a very good price.
