It is the ninth game in the Halo series, and the second major release in the franchise since Bungie parted ways with Microsoft, although the game is no longer associated with the Halo or Bungie brands. As with Halo 3, Reach is the first game in the series to feature a linear campaign with a prologue and epilogue.
In Reach, the UNSC Infinity is dispatched to obtain the final element of the Key, and discovers that the Covenant is on Earth. The United Nations Space Command is forced to use a group of marines known as Spartans to defend the planet. In the process, the Spartans are left with numerous fragments of an ancient alien device known as the Forerunner Shield, and the Covenant also possess some of the Shield's technology.
Halo: Reach was released on February 10, 2010.

The game takes place in 2260, one year after the events of Halo 3, and 13 years before the setting of Halo: Combat Evolved. It is set during the Covenant war, but takes place on the planet Reach, in the vicinity of Earth and several other planets.
Reach is one of the last human inhabited worlds, most of its population having been evacuated when the Covenant discovered it and began their invasion of the Milky Way. The remaining population, the UNSC Infinity, along with the Gravemind and the Arbiter, are later intercepted by the Covenant's fleet, the UNSC Spirit of Fire, in orbit around Reach. The Gravemind is captured and the Infinity destroyed to prevent its return to the fleet.
The Covenant have been annihilated by the Forerunners, and Earth has been spared of the threat that was supposed to return and destroy humanity again. The Infinity is later recovered and repaired by the UNSC with the assistance of the Builders, using technology found at the Prometheus Ruins, near the surface of Reach. The Infinity is then sent to salvage the Key, to give the Forerunners back what they are owed, and finally to confront the Forerunners about the fate of all sentient life. The Key's power ups the "tyranny" of the Master Chief's neural implant, giving him abilities that enable him to see things beyond the physical world and enable him to fight in the all-out "holy war" against the Forerunners that is initiated by the Gravemind in this point of the storyline.[1][2]
