Common Pitfalls
Here is a list of some common issues:
Buddy Lists and Conversations
1. You are searching a buddy list and you search for a buddy, but you dont see a list of results.
Pidgin displays a list of "Searching" when you search a buddy list for a buddy, and it does not list results until it completes. The timeout is less than 1/10th of a second. This way, the search in not using up your buddy's net connection and continues to work fine.
2. You are searching a conversation and you search for a conversation, but you dont see a list of results.
The search is not done in a separate dialog, so when searching for a conversation, it is done in the "Search for contact" dialog.
3. The buddy list and conversation searches are not happening in parallel to one another.
This means that the search for a buddy and a search for a conversation are not happening in parallel. This is a huge bug that has not been fixed yet.
Buddy List
1. You have too many buddies!
Pidgin decides how to display the buddy list by the buddy count.
- Too many buddies is too many - Show contacts with more than 1000 buddies or more.
- Less than 1000 - Show contacts with less than 100 buddies or more.
- Never show - Show all buddies - This option isnt valid anymore.
Searching
1. Searching can take very long!
The search is not done in a separate dialog, it is done in the "Search for contact" dialog. For this reason, it uses a lot of resources, so the search wont finish fast. If you want to get results for a buddy search quickly, there is a "Search not only online" option in the "Search for contact" dialog.
2. You can't search for contacts that have no buddy count!
This is a bug. Pidgin thinks that the buddy list is complete and does not search for buddies that have no buddy count.
3. There are no results!
