DiskCryptor is a free and open-source disk encryption software package that encrypts and decrypts data using advanced algorithms and encryption modes, such as AES and Twofish, with the safety of 128-bit Blowfish and 256-bit Serpent. The data is encrypted and decrypted on a TPM chip, using a symmetric key, to prevent intrusion by "man-in-the-middle" attacks on the Internet. DiskCryptor is created by Richard Günther (gultig) since 2004. Version 1.0 was released on 1 November 2005. It is the first application to run completely in the Trusted Platform Module.
The program encrypts or decrypts a disk, a partition, a file or a folder. It can be started manually as soon as the computer starts, or automatically after shut down. You can specify the usage of the TPM chip after a kernel bootstrap. The software does not require hardware on the PC, and it is released under GPLv2 license.
The encrypted volume is available through NTFS file system for Windows, Linux, AIX and Mac OS X. Optional, but recommended encryption algorithms are Blowfish or Serpent. If several devices are connected, you can choose between multiple keyfiles, or allocate the same keyfile to several drives.
Keyfiles can also be used to open encrypted drives on other computers. The software comes with a utility for this purpose.
A simple graphical user interface allows you to complete the settings without having to understand the underlying technologies. The program has been developed by Richard Günther (gultig) as an independent application based on (and partially derived from) SysDecrypt.

Built-in File Encryption Software
DiskCryptor is a standalone application. It does not have a personal or system encryption service built in. It uses a key file or a password to access the protected disk. It is not necessary to have another application to encrypt folders, files, partitions or disks. All encrypted disk drives are stored inside a new folder with DiskCryptor's name. This folder is located in the same location as when DiskCryptor runs. DiskCryptor works with the same folder location as any other program. For instance, the user can choose to encrypt the partition located on the MBR (Master Boot Record) or on the GPT (GUID Partition Table) of the hard drive.
Installation
DiskCryptor is compatible with all major operating systems such as Windows, Mac OS and Linux. Therefore it is not necessary to install additional software on your computer.
If you do not have a password but a keyfile, you will be able to assign a keyfile with only a few clicks.
If you are using Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 8 or Windows 8.1, you need to run the setup.exe. This procedure is very simple and will ask you only a few questions to complete. You can choose whether the program should be installed after Windows has been restarted (auto-restart) or be started at Windows startup. All other questions of the setup will be solved automatically by the program.
