I just love this Indian movie Urdu movie starring a great cast of Rekha,Naseeruddin Shah, Farooq Shaikh, Zaibunnisa, Javed Khan and more.The plot is based on love, passion and intrigue,written and directed by Muzzaffar Ali.I love how it has so many great supporting cast like Raza Murad and the director himself.They have done a great job in bringing this theme together.The story,though strong in many ways could have been better,but the way it was done made this movie stand out.It is a must watch movie.
After a great comeback with Hera Pheri,Shakti,and Bharat (which were all extremely good),he didn’t come back with anything in the time after.Jab Jab Phool Khile,Sohni Mahiwal,Mother India,Zindagi Gulzar Hai,were just ordinary movies.The film industry expected him to return after Bharat with something which would stand out.In 1981 he came with a film and tried to be as frank and as daring as the 1966 film Charandas.The film was called “Umrao Jaan “ and it did stand out,although it was very experimental and could not be called an ‘Umrao Jaan’.It could be called an experimental film with a horror like theme.It has made me think of it as a masterpiece,like Rashomon,even though I am not sure if Rashomon is classified as a masterpiece.The reason why I call this film Umrao Jaan is that it does not have a conventional hero,as it is based on the concept of horror.No one dies in this film but Umrao and the people responsible for the death.This film is a masterpiece and its concept,motive and execution by Muzzafar Ali is outstanding.Even his casting has been exceptional.From a supporting role to lead roles,every role in the film is absolutely correct.Muzaffar Ali did not need to do anything for this film to stand out,he already did that in Hera Pheri and Shakti.This is a great achievement from the young filmmaker.
Javed Khan has to come second in this film,when it comes to acting as the supporting characters,like Zafar (Rezakar Khan),Kiran (Zaibunnisa),Shiva (Farooq Shaikh) 3125841983
