# I love that real snake!
The layer system isn't the only way Photoshop works. Another way to work with layers is to mimic reality by painting or drawing a layer onto a separate photo (or scanned photo). The image you paint or draw replaces the layer below it. This isn't generally a good way to work unless you are painting with a graphic tablet. It's generally easier and better for digital images to use the toolboxes and presets in Photoshop, which are more direct and less confusing than working in layers.
So how do you go about getting the layer effects you want? One easy way is to start with a blank canvas (like a new photo) and add layers to add effects. Layers can be applied from the top down or from the bottom up, so in some cases you may need to change your mental approach to starting with a blank canvas. In Figure 3-13, the method on the left was applied to an image I had already created (in this case, just cloning). The method on the right was the first step in creating a photo from scratch. This time, I used the default canvas and added a new layer. Here you can see that the previous layer has been erased and the new layer is ready for editing. In Figure 3-14, I made some changes, erased some that I didn't want, and changed the blending mode. Layers are amazingly versatile, so don't get intimidated by them.
