In recent years, the cryptocurrency has attracted a huge number of interested users who have been able to change many trends. Initially, one of these was mining - every person who got acquainted with Bitcoin tried his hand at getting rewarded with crypto assets, for which there was no need for a large amount of equipment. However, now the process of obtaining new blocks, and with it the rewards, has become much more complicated, there are too many interested people, which is why mining ceases to be so in demand. In addition, a significant amount of electricity consumed also negatively affects nature, influencing the reputation of the method of obtaining cryptocurrency.

Over the past two to three years, an alternative to proof-of-work mechanism called staking has been gaining popularity. It is not native to the first-generation platforms and is much more common among later released blockchains, but its advantages have contributed to its rapid adoption as a counterpoint to mining processes.
Important. The fact is that with the Proof-of-Work consensus mechanism at the present time, it is very difficult to achieve success without having sufficient computing power with you or not being in the pool of miners who then divide the profit among themselves. In contrast, the Proof-of-Stake mechanism work is based not on the availability of technical capabilities, but on the funds invested in the system, allowing any user to start staking almost immediately after mastering the basics of interaction with cryptocurrencies.
How staking works
In the case of working on a consensus proof-of-stake mechanism, the participant invests a certain part of the available cryptocurrency, which allows him to act as a validator of the operation. Most are built on the principle “the more funds, the more rights to be chosen”, however, there are some variations of the conditions that are based on the reputation of the user or his activity within the blockchain. During the confirmation of the delegator's operation, the validators act as guarantors, receiving in return a reward from the transaction fee, thereby turning staking into a way of passive income.
With greater environmental friendliness, fairness of approach, maintained security of operations, and much lower costs to participate in the process, the staking as a method has become more and more popular, encouraging new platforms to work on this particular consensus mechanism or old ones to gradually move from mining to it, as does now the Ethereum blockchain.
Important. However, not everyone is ready to take such a step, since it is not only costly, but also takes a huge amount of time, where the minimum transition period is about five years. During this time, users are unlikely to want to wait that long or maintain the blockchain further, which is why many platforms with a Proof-of-Work consensus mechanism are at risk of losing their audience.
To prevent this, as well as to speed up the moment with the provision of staking for coins running on proof of work, a project such as cross staking or cross-chain staking was developed.
