A dynamic memory management is used which allows to track the amount of features used.
The library is written in a quite generic manner and allows to use any feature-matcher or feature point detector as long as they are implemented in the form of a
function pointer (which stores the matching, ID generation, and outlier rejection implementation).
Feature Point Detection:
LIBVISO uses in many cases the fast “OpenCV” library to estimate the corners of the image. A direct usage is possible but multiple
polygons are needed for each corner in order to allow tracking. The “OpenCV” library provides implementations for several different polygon shapes including ellipses
but these also require multiple polygons.
For this reason it is recommended to use the “cv::SimpleBlobDetector” which allows to use standard polygons to detect features in the image.
The feature matching itself is based on a variant of RANSAC with 50% cross-correlation and the finally selected feature matches are used to estimate the 6 DOF
egomotion of the camera.
Feature Matcher:
The feature matcher is implemented in terms of the more abstract “boost::unique_ptr” interface for building a function pointer which stores all
implementation for feature matching, ID generation, and outliers rejection. In addition it is possible to pass parameters to the matcher.
If a certain implementation is passed to the function pointer it will be used.

The application can then use the estimated scale to compute the camera height to ground, which can be used to get an estimate of the camera height over ground.
The camera height can then be used to compute a pose of the scene that is extrinsic with respect to the camera. This is needed to re-project the extracted 2D to 3D feature points. The extrinsic pose is used by the scene reconstruction pipeline to track features over time and reconstruct a dense 3D model of the environment.
As mentioned, LIBVISO2 needs the camera height over ground and the camera orientation to do its job. The camera height over ground can for instance be obtained from the GPS, an ultrasonic sensor or from good assumptions.
The camera orientation is needed for the initial pose estimation of each feature. The relative orientation is needed to describe the rotation that changes the coordinates from image to real-world coordinates.
There are two ways to derive the initial pose:
· Direct estimation: Each feature point is pose-estimated by a least square minimization (using e.g. the 8-point algorithm).
