"QuickDNS is a DNS lookup tool written in Perl and packaged with Perl modules. It is a high performance DNS query tool which caches DNS responses and allows multiple simultaneous queries. It will also check DNS entries for record rechecking after a certain amount of time has passed."

How it works:
"A Perl daemon runs continually and executes scripts passed through initscript, which are similar to cron jobs. The scripts are executed based on the time passed since last execute, some time (in seconds) after the daemon was started. The time and amount of time passed are passed as arguments through stdin/stdout. If any errors occur, stdout and stderr are sent to syslog and the daemon is stopped. Each incoming connection is passed to the script and the script executes the DNS query, stops when it has completed or has timed out, and then passes the results through stdout to syslog. The daemon processes 10 connections at a time."

Installation:
"Just unzip QuickDNS in any directory in the path. There are no dependencies."
Startup:
"A script to set the daemon to start at boot has been included in the /etc/init.d folder (or if you used the quickdns user, in /home/quickdns). To start the daemon manually, run the daemon script in /etc/init.d/quickdns. You can start/stop the daemon by executing the /etc/init.d/quickdns stop or /etc/init.d/quickdns start scripts."
Configuration:
"If no directories are specified, or if a -D or --dir are specified, the daemon will read the configuration file /etc/quickdns/quickdns.conf. There are two options you can set here. The interval will set how often to check for updated DNS records, and the idle timeout will set the time after which to stop checking for updated records. You can also set the proxy address for the connection to the daemon. You can use your network proxy to reduce the amount of data transferred."

Here is a quick test. I setup Xtradb and left it running for a bit, then started Analog, and compared the output of Analog and QuickDNS when I type "analog" into the console. There is about 0.1 seconds of

This is only released as of now for Windows XP, and as your active time zone changes the way it works, so do the entries, but it's still free software, so you can pull it out of the original zipfile at your leisure.
Don't bother downloading the source code, as it's no longer required (haven't had to touch it in a while). Just drop this file in a directory with AnalogX, and do AnalogX --server= (or -w if you want you be fully transparent). It'll be faster than your local DNS server, and will handle multiple simultaneous queries.
You can of course install the whole package, but it's no longer required, so you can take it out at any time if you want.
You can install on Linux with something like this:
% sudo apt-get install minidns
Get it from a repository for your Linux box (I like these guys  or install from source.

I've had great success using dnsmasq. It can be configured to use any upstream DNS server on the internet and will cache DNS results so they are faster the next time they are requested. I'm not sure what the performance impact of caching upstream DNS server responses would be relative to the TTL of your resolvers. You would have to measure that to see what your performance would be like.
