David was a 19-year-old student at the U.C. Santa Barbara when he created Roblox. He applied for a job as an assistant at the local university and was given the position after meeting with the administrator.
Baszucki had just received his first ever paycheck for his job at the university for a year's worth of work. This was a huge milestone in his young life. However, his money was going to a nightclub that he had no intention of entering. He was a no-show for the job, and the administrator was furious with him.
Baszucki justifiably feared his neck. He was told not to return, and so he went to his father to seek financial help. His father had no money to give. He spent the entire sum he had earned in the previous month on a shiny, new, silver Honda Civic. Baszucki spent that afternoon getting ready to enter the upscale nightclub where he was supposed to meet the administrator. He ended up on the main road with the car.
Baszucki was crestfallen. He was all alone on the road with his father and mother nowhere to be found. He felt a bit like Frodo when Gandalf told Frodo to stay on the road until he knew who Sam was.
Many others have faced adversity and worse, and so Baszucki decided to start developing his game engine. He began by coding a few basic physics simulation algorithms. After that, he started to create a platform that enabled users to program games on their own devices. It was a game where everyone could compete in a game on their own computer.
