HP says it is entering this market because the way people use today's mobile devices (and the way they will be using them in the future) is changing rapidly.

HP's tablets will ship in the first quarter of 2013.
HP says its new machines will be made with a new type of material -- a fluoropolymer "composite."
HP describes the new material as "a proprietary compound that has an ultra-thin, lightweight, yet hard outer skin, on top of which is a composite core."
Other material solutions HP is currently investigating include a similar polymer and thermoplastic core structure, and a carbon fiber or metal core and polymer skin.
Asked whether the new HP tablets will be able to run programs designed for Apple's iPad, HP said the new designs will run the Android software.
HP wants to be able to run Office on its tablets, and in April it launched a preview version of the software for the new devices. It plans to launch a production version in the next couple of months.
HP's new mobile computers will be designed to connect to docking stations or to attach to a keyboard and a mouse.
They will run the same software as regular laptops, and they will come with Windows 7 Pro and Windows 8 Pro, as well as Android and ChromeOS.
