This is a network sniffer that is designed to capture packets received from the network interface of the device. When you run this program, you are given the option to view, edit, and filter packets. Options include:
Printing the packets, which is the more basic view.
The more detailed view, which includes the header and the body of the packet.
Opening the file, for dumping the packets to a text file.
Saving the packets for later viewing, if you do not wish to print.
It is possible to disable the printing of packets. However, many packages are sent to the printer, in order to log the packet and the port it was received on. If you wish to disable printing, be sure to change the destination.
Configuring the program
There are several configurations that you can set within the program. These changes to the configurables are saved, so that they can be reloaded at a later time.
Name of the computer, or computer interface that is being sniffed.
The destination of the packets. If you wish to view, edit or filter them, you should use a file.
You may view, edit, or filter packets, using IP address, network name, or using the host interface.
Display of packets, or filtering of packets.
Packets are displayed, usually using a graphical interface.
You may filter packets by type, protocol, content, or using a rule.
You may save packets, which is very useful for later analysis.
The packet viewer
You may view packets using a graphical interface. You have the choice of:
Viewing the ID of the packet
Viewing the IP header
Viewing the source, destination, and subnet
Viewing the packet contents
The packet contents are encoded as 16 bits per byte. If the packet is encrypted, you will not be able to view these, unless you have the source code. Packets are displayed in a way that makes it easy to quickly identify the common elements of a packet.
The viewer provides a number of useful features.
Filter by source, destination, or both
Convert IP addresses to network names
Display the total number of packets
Display the IP address, source port, and destination port
Display the number of bytes in the packet
Display the byte count of the IP header
Display the number of TTL fields in the IP header
