This book is designed as a combined text book and study guide, intended for use in a BA level Criminology course. It’s meant to complement other criminological textbooks available, such as that of the English Institute of Criminology or Solved, and perhaps more importantly to provide students with a context in which to read the material.
Because of the nature of the subject matter – i.e. a criminological perspective on the causation of crime – some of the materials are “simplistic”, in that they are either highly conceptual or statistical. This doesn’t mean the book shouldn’t be read in conjunction with other textbooks, but rather that it’s perhaps better read in a linear manner rather than as a sequence of disjointed chapters. This is partly because the text includes discussion on many different topics and, of necessity, one does need to read a number of chapters before reading another chapter of a particular topic.
Having said that, some chapters stand out as being very readable and very helpful. This is true of the chapter on mass unemployment – in particular, the section on automation and unemployment. Likewise, the section on trauma and crime – especially the discussion on exposure to traumatic events, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and victimisation – is very well written.
In terms of statistical analysis, the study of recidivism has been revised significantly. A previous version of this text used recidivism as a measure of whether or not an individual had committed another crime, and then analysed the impact of various factors (for example, religion) on whether or not they were actually convicted of the crime. However, the most recent version of the text is now much more nuanced in its approach and, as a result, the section on recidivism has been revised considerably. Some old figures remain, and these are cited in the text, but the main message is that risk factors for recidivism tend to be more nuanced than simply the presence or absence of a conviction for a past offence.
Mostly, though, this book does not attempt to provide the traditional criminological answers to questions such as, “What causes crime?” Instead, the book’s focus is to provide a criminological perspective on crime and its causation. And of course, the book’s general approach is not universally accepted. For example, it does not take the so-called “progressive”
