The film was a collaboration between actors Cheech Marin and Tommy Chong, who had already been working together on The Cheech & Chong Comedy Act, a comedy act that ran on CBS from 1969 to 1971. The film was released on May 10, 1978. The film earned $11,024,000 in North America and grossed $28,600,000 internationally. At the time, it was the highest-grossing comedy film of all time. The soundtrack became the first to go platinum, and the film was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Picture.
In 2015, Up in Smoke was voted the best film of all time by TIME magazine, and Cheech Marin was voted the second best actor of all time.
A sequel, Up in Smoke Again, was released in 1980. A prequel, Up in Smoke: Pre-Sequel, was released in 1991, with Chong taking on a leading role.

Plot
Michael and Tracy, two stoners from the San Fernando Valley, move into an apartment in Los Angeles after graduating high school. Tracy gets a job, but Michael wants nothing to do with work. He spends his time writing his poems, reads, watches TV, and occasionally smokes pot. Tracy is shocked when she discovers he smokes marijuana on a daily basis. They spend their free time smoking, watching TV, and lounging around, much to Tracy's chagrin, especially when her wealthy and snobbish friend Elizabeth visits.
Tracy, having inherited $2,000, runs into a pregnant woman on the street and gives her the money to pay for an abortion. The woman gives birth to a girl. Tracy feels guilty about the abortion and keeps it a secret from Michael.
After Michael and Tracy have lived together for a while, Tracy decides to move out. They get into a big fight about it, and a drunk Michael throws her and her clothes into a Dumpster. Tracy runs into Elizabeth who suggests Tracy call a lawyer to get a restraining order against Michael. She also takes a job as a waitress and meets two guys: Duane and Kenny.
Michael moves in with his girlfriend Jill, who is more interested in his car than him. He talks with a counselor about his sexual problems. Michael and his friends have a day of fun together after drinking a lot of 3125841983
