In 1994, AutoCAD was expanded to include applications for architectural design and 3D modeling, with the name changed to AutoCAD Architecture. AutoCAD architectural design software is still sold under this name. In 2014, Autodesk added Design Review, a collaboration platform that supports the review, approval and management of design development and documentation. The Software as a Service (SaaS) platform is incorporated into AutoCAD Architecture. These developments, along with a new emphasis on interoperability, helped to renew interest in AutoCAD.
The development of AutoCAD was influenced by a number of technical developments. In 1978, the Apple II was introduced with graphics capabilities that were much more powerful than those of earlier IBM PC-based systems. Also in 1978, Xerox PARC introduced the Xerox Alto, which was a microcomputer designed as an office workstation. This workstation was intended to become a workbench with multiple functions, but the Xerox Alto was never released to the market. Instead, it was modified to become the Xerox Dandelion (1981) and ultimately, the Xerox 8010. The Dandelion was released to the public in 1982.
At about the same time, CAD applications were being developed on mini-computers (sophisticated engineering workstations), but most of these were actually developed by third-party vendors that specialized in CAD. These vendors included Mercury Software and Bricscad Ltd., of the United Kingdom. In 1981, the professional CAD system DATABASE was released by DATAGRAPHICS, of the United States.
AutoCAD's early developer was MITS, Inc., later renamed Autodesk, Inc. and now known as Autodesk, Inc. Autodesk's entry in the early CAD market was the first totally integrated CAD system that did not require the use of a separate graphics terminal to draw or modify the display. This development was the direct result of the availability of powerful graphics boards in the Apple II. The new, IBM PC-compatible architecture of AutoCAD was named after the company, AUTOCAD.
An early application for the AutoCAD system was a program that allowed users to draw and manipulate schematic diagrams of car parts using a mouse. The result is a framework for the development of conceptual architectural design.
Autodesk Architectural Studio
Autodesk Architectural Studio is a 3D BIM (Building Information Modelling) and MEP (mechanical, electrical, plumbing) design product. The architectural product is intended for design of large projects with a strong emphasis on sustainability. As with many other Autodesk products, it is based on a series of modules, known as Architectural Community. The entire package is called Architectural Studio. Autodesk Architectural Studio is sold separately from other Autodesk products, and is only available for the Windows platform. Autodesk has also produced the Architectural Studio Portable Edition.
