Rockstar Games announced its next project, Grand Theft Auto V, on April 13, 2012. The development of the game was led by Rockstar North, and many of its developers had previously worked on the production of GTA: Vice City. Rockstar has continued to work on the game under its new label, Rockstar Games, with the game projected to be released on current generation consoles and Microsoft Windows by 2013 or 2014.
In the plot, the protagonist, Tony "Toni" Camino, is a top lieutenant for the Camino Family, a powerful drug cartel based in Liberty City, a fictional, fictitious state in the United States of America. Vice City, a smaller city, is located in the state's Southern part. Toni, seeking to strike out on his own and escape his organization, runs a successful nightclub and casino in Liberty City. Upon learning of the criminal activities of the Camino Family, Toni is forced to become an informant for the police in exchange for his family's safety. Toni's brother Johnny is not initially against the idea of Toni becoming an informant; however, Toni does not trust the Camino Family's ways and persuades his brother to help him escape his life and join the Las Venturas clan, a rival of the Camino Family.
The gameplay focuses on players guiding the protagonist through a fully explorable, open-world environment. The player is able to complete various side quests, some of which are optional, and may also engage in open-world activities, such as racing cars, stealing and reselling vehicles, and building weapons and houses. In the course of the story, the player may acquire other people or businesses that can be engaged in various activities.
Grand Theft Auto: Vice City was released for the Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 2, and Xbox 360 consoles on November 17, 2006, receiving positive reviews.
