There is a very good description on the NMS website that explains the purpose and design of the API in detail.
In addition to the individual API's, NMS also provides a number of helper classes to ease the API development process. These include; NMS.Messaging.ObjectDescriptors,
NMS.Messaging.MessageDestination, and NMS.Messaging.MessageProducer.
What is interesting about NMS is that it is specifically developed to have a familiar interface to people that are not familiar with Java.
But that is the whole point, because it allows developers to use C# (VB or any other.NET language) to build a.NET application using a single API to connect to multiple different providers. It is also designed to be extensible so that other providers can be added to the NMS framework.
Let me show you a real simple example of how this would work.
Suppose I wanted to write a NMS server application in C# that connects to an ActiveMQ broker and sends some messages to a queue. I use the client application to send messages to the NMS server like this:
Client.SendMessage("ActiveMQ", "Producer", "myqueue", "a message");
Client.SendMessage("ActiveMQ", "Producer", "myqueue", "another message");
Client.SendMessage("ActiveMQ", "Producer", "myqueue", "a third message");
Client.SendMessage("ActiveMQ", "Producer", "myqueue", "a fourth message");
As you can see, the NMS client API is fairly simple. This is what I would use in a Java implementation:
UUID exchange = new UUID("ActiveMQ");
UUID queue = new UUID("myqueue");
message.put("key","value");
MessageProducer producer = MQClient.createProducer(exchange, queue);
producer.start();
producer.sendMessage(message);
producer.stop();
But I want to do all of the above from a.NET client application using NMS. So, if we just implement this in the way above, we should be able to do it. As you can see below, we have to pass 3 arguments to the NMS.Messaging.MessageProducer.start method, the argument exchange is the exchange we want to send the messages to, the argument queue is the queue we want to send messages
