AutoCAD is not a CAD program. It is a collection of software tools that can be used together to build a 2D and 3D geometric model, typically of an industrial, architectural or product design.
AutoCAD is a proprietary program owned by Autodesk. The company has historically been the dominant provider of CAD/CAM/CAE software, but it is challenged by newer entrants such as Alibre, SeroCAD, Simutrans, Slic3r and Pro/ENGINEER.
AutoCAD's main competitors are Autodesk's 3D CAD programs AutoCAD and Autodesk Inventor. There are also some CAD/CAM programs that can be used in concert with the AutoCAD or AutoCAD Inventor products, such as Alibre and SeroCAD.
AutoCAD has several versions that are constantly updated, which can lead to difficulties in keeping track of when and what updates have been applied. For a list of available AutoCAD products, see the reference section at the bottom of this page.

History 
The origins of AutoCAD go back to the 1990s, when Jeff Van Der Weele, a mathematician at the University of Wisconsin, developed an early version of AutoCAD for his classes and for his own use.  
In 1994, Jeff Van Der Weele's student Mark Litwin showed the first public version of AutoCAD at an industry conference. Litwin's design was subsequently named "AutoCAD" after the engineers from Autonetics Inc. who sponsored the original development of AutoCAD. The name was then adopted by Autodesk.
In 1996, Jeff Van Der Weele founded Autodesk, Inc. and Autodesk Labs, a research and development division in Cambridge, Massachusetts, U.S. In 1998, Van Der Weele and his students decided to spin off Autodesk Labs to form a company named Alias Research. Alias Research released AutoCAD 2000. In 2001, Van Der Weele left Autodesk and Alias Research to join the faculty of the MIT Sloan School of Management.
In late 2003, Autodesk re-released AutoCAD 2000 under the new version number, AutoCAD 2002. In 2005, Autodesk released a new product, AutoCAD Mechanical, which did not provide the capability of pre-computer drafting.
In 2006, Autodesk acquired the architecture and construction company ZGF Architects. ZGF Architects' product, called Building Design Suite, was released in 2007.
AutoCAD 2008 was the first version of AutoCAD to introduce all-new visual appearance. It also included new capabilities for DWF, DWFx and DWFm.
AutoCAD 2009 included several new features, including the ability to write comments on drawings and extended annotation with the annotate function.
AutoCAD 2010 added to the previous release an updated user interface and the ability to work with many files and projects in a single window. Several new types of annotations were added, including the ability to display a single line or curve in multiple colors.
