Zakariya Azizi, 24, is one of the 9.7 million refugees who have fled war and persecution in his home country of Afghanistan. He is a survivor of the Taliban’s attacks on civilians and of being shot in the leg while helping to collect and carry food and medicine to a hospital for injured civilians. “I am fortunate, because I was only injured. Many people are dead and wounded,” he says.
Zakariya’s family arrived in Iran in 2014 after their home in Kandahar was destroyed. He is now studying carpentry in Tabriz. His first job is to pay for school. He feels grateful and fortunate to be alive and is determined to help the others.
“My studies are very important to me. If I cannot do my studies I cannot do anything. We must survive, so we must support each other,” he says.
