In the movie industry, the visual effects supervisor (VFX supervisor) is responsible for the creative direction and supervision of the visual effects artists and technical and creative personnel in a film production's visual effects, animation and digital visual effects departments.
Early in the history of cinema, VFX supervisors were often involved with the director, production designer and other departments as well as with the studio. In many cases, the VFX supervisor would be an experienced and well-known practitioner who could coordinate and supervise artists and technicians.
Since the early years of cinema, there have been VFX supervisors (sometimes called "effects supervisors" or "visual effects editors" in later times) who have made their own distinctive mark on the films in which they worked. Early VFX supervisors included Herbert Adams (1911), William Cameron Menzies (1910-1911), Fred Paul (1912), Frank William Mars (1913), and Henry Cowperthwaite (1917-1919).
Although many early film production facilities built their own effects houses as a way to fulfill their contracted-for requirements, particularly for the projection of their films, these facilities soon began to outsource their effects to independent firms. This was especially true of the studios, whose contracted-for "visual effects" became a source of growing revenue. The huge Technicolor and Warner Brothers photochemicals in particular would eventually drive the need for visual effects companies to specialize in the use of those chemicals.
Early supervisors
The earliest documented film to utilize VFX is the 1913 German film Spiel und Spielen, which used chroma-keying to create the effect of moving images. This was more than two years before the patent for chroma-keying was granted in 1915. However, this technique was effectively patented by its inventor Max Blecher in 1910. The film was also notable for containing color tinting, which had been recently patented.
The two-strip (two-color) system used in film before 1910 was the most common one, as it was far less expensive than the three-strip system and had less maintenance and no deleterious effects on the image. Yet in 1912, two-strip technology failed to prove sufficiently successful for a major feature film, probably because of the extra expense and the difficulty in coordinating the images.
