Enjoyable as it may be, we have to admit that we’re a bit disappointed with Snow White and the Huntsman: the film is much more about style than substance.
The primary story in this film deals with a good-looking prince who runs away from home in order to marry his true love, a young and stunning Snow White. Both women have dangerous enemies, and the prince is as good at wielding a sword as he is at throwing one. After a failed attempt at killing the prince, his wife and sister in-law, the bad guys, help him get a contract with Snow White. This is a great plot that has been built over years with a successful story. So, imagine our disappointment when we saw that Snow White is basically the antagonist of this film, and that she doesn’t do anything else apart from standing around like a jerk.
Yes, Snow White does a lot of talking, although she doesn’t do much of anything else, and if there’s one thing this film is guilty of, it’s that.
Our initial reaction was the same as the prince’s: she’s just not interesting. But once the movie got going, we understood that this was not the case, and we were indeed entertained by the performances from Kristen Stewart and Charlize Theron.
But is it enough? The answer is no.
The chemistry between the two leads is something that makes this movie more than just an average action-adventure flick, but a high-quality work that gives us something to think about. Unfortunately, there’s little of that here.
Theron and Stewart have no chemistry and the same chemistry we see in other movies, it’s just that here it takes more time to build up.
And here’s where it really gets frustrating: when the movie finally kicks in, you feel as if everything’s been building up for so long and you never get to enjoy it.
The film could have been fantastic, but instead it’s mediocre.
As for the fight scenes, they’re pretty good, especially those between the hero and Snow White. But that doesn’t make them any less annoying.
The voice cast is certainly a great asset to the movie, with an especially great performance from Eddie Redmayne as the hero.
