Jabir ibn Hayyan (Arabic جبر بن هيىن, Arabic pronunciation: [jibri n ˈhaɪʔen]) was an Arab Muslim astronomer, philosopher, and author from the Umayyad Caliphate.He lived in Iraq and Syria.He was a realist who argued that a scientific investigation of the natural world was important. He is known for his book The Book of the Balance of Wisdom, which contains a description of a celestial clock, and his book The Book of the Looking Glass of the World, which describes a method of determining longitude. He also wrote on astronomy, nature, and medicine.
Jabir bin Hayyan was born in 721 at Hayyan in Khurasan, Iraq-now in Iran. His father, a scribe, died while Jabir was young. He learned Arabic and Persian at home, studied mathematics, science, and philosophy under the Abbasid caliph al-Mamun, and travelled extensively. Jabir first taught al-Mamun's son, and then under Al-Marwazi, and ultimately al-Mamun. He also travelled to Damascus, Basra, Hira, and Khurasan.
He wrote many books on philosophy and astronomy, the most famous of which is Kitab al-Mafatih (The Balance of Wisdom). Kitab al-Mafatih contains a method for calculating time, based on a celestial clock, which was new to the 8th century.
