Photoshop's changeable interface — which you can personalize so it looks like the interface you prefer — can be a bit daunting for beginners. The good news is that you don't have to know all the ins and outs of the program; you can start using and learning the basics in just a few minutes. In this chapter, you find some of the most essential concepts, such as layers, the Layers palette, and the tools palette. Additionally, you discover how to work with layers in specific ways to create and manipulate images.
Establishing the Starting Point
Your first Photoshop foray is important, even if you don't plan on entering the professional ranks of design and photography, so you want to make sure you can do the following:
  Get a feel for the interface and work through the Basics section of this chapter.
  Develop your power preferences. See the Power User section later in this chapter.
  Join the Photoshop community. Spend some time in the Tutorials and Other Resources sections that follow.

So let's get started on your Photoshop journey. From this point on, you follow the basic standard route that I use for every book: You start with a basic overview of the program and then illustrate how to use its tools and features.
And remember, don't forget your Cheat Sheet; I include it in the book's front matter for a reason.
Taking a look around
You can tell that Photoshop is a serious program from the minute you start it up. Its fast, user-friendly interface and environment of easy and intuitive tools make the program all-embracing. If you're a regular desktop user, you won't even have to take your eyes off your screen. But if you've never used the program before, it's not all just fun. You need to know how to make your way around in case you get lost, and you have to decide what works best for you.

This article will take you through the process of editing a photo in Photoshop Elements.
Step 1: Open the image
When you open an image with Photoshop Elements, the image is displayed in its native format. This means it could be either TIF (True-colour), JPEG, or PNG.
Locate the image in the folder you wish to edit in the navigation panel. To locate the image simply look for it listed on a folder or beneath an icon.
Step 2: Edit the image
The editing tools are split into different tabs on the right side of the screen. To access the tools simply click on the tabs on the right side.
You can also click on the tabs by using the Tab-based navigation menu found in the upper right corner of the screen.
Step 3: Preview the image
Previewing an image in Photoshop Elements shows you a slideshow of the image. This allows you to view a high-quality version of the image. You can preview the image for different effects that you may want to apply.
Step 4: Modify the image
In this step, you will manipulate the features of the image using the editing tools.
Step 5: Save the image
At this stage, you would have edited the image to the point where you are satisfied with it. You may want to save the image. Saving an image is explained in Step 7.
Step 6: Generate a web-optimized version of the image
Generating a web-optimized version of an image can help to make sure that the image looks the best on the internet. To generate a web-optimized image, click on the menu icon found at the top of the left side of the screen and select the Web-Optimized Image option.
Step 7: Save the image
Once you are finished with the image, it is now ready to be saved. To save the image, go to the File menu and select Save, and then select the file type you would like to save the image in.
