With the great success of Minecraft and Terraria, indie game developers have taken their newfound success in a new direction. They’ve combined the two beloved game mechanics into new game genres. In this vein, GourdLand is a fantasy island survival game set on a procedurally generated grid, with a little crafting and exploration thrown in. It’s a game that’s harder to give away details of because of its still-under-development nature, but I’ll be able to do a follow-up review once it’s ready for release.
Controls and Movement
At first glance, GourdLand seems to be pretty basic. There are three directions to explore, as well as two up/down directions. There are items you can collect that act as blocks or doors, and enemies appear to move in a set pattern, patrolling certain areas. It’s nothing that’s too difficult to work with, but it also means that players don’t have to think too much. It’s the classic approach to a videogame (compared to something like Black & White, which requires players to carefully plan a strategy, then execute that strategy).
It all comes into play as players traverse the island, chopping down trees and building them into a bridge to other areas of the island. The bridge is eventually destroyed, and players must travel around the island to create new bridges to help them traverse the island once again.
You can get all the information about the map by talking to other players, so if you’re up to exploring a little more, you’ll probably want to consider it. I’m not entirely sure if I’ll bother; I can see the island getting very crowded very quickly, and the maps I’ve seen so far do seem very limited. I’ll be sure to try out the full version once it’s available though, to get a more accurate idea of the game’s potential.
Combat
Speaking of getting lost, the combat is where the game really starts to shine. The combat is a combination of resource management and a complex set of battle moves that are triggered when a certain amount of arrows or fire are fired from a certain range 3125841983
