As we learned, after the Battle of Karbala, the Imam was captured and taken to Yazid's court in Damascus. In Damascus, Ibn al-Zubayr, now considered a moderate leader and a new link to the Abbasids was declared an Imam, in addition to Ali Ibn Abi Talib (who was an ordinary Imam) and the other Kharijites.
Al-Husayn and his brother Ali were tortured and eventually executed in the month of Rajab, 721 AH. This took place after a few months of imprisonment in Damascus.
In Yemen, the word 'Kharijite' had its own meaning. The word actually means that those who fought against the government of the Umayyads (Abbasids) in the time of Hisham ibn Abd al-Malik (AH 715-741) - a person with a similar surname to that of the grandfather of Imam al-Husayn - were called Kharijites.
According to some sources, a group of Kharijites took over the city of Shaizar in North Yemen (the name of the city means the tomb of al-Husayn) and defeated the army of Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan (the Abbasid Caliph who took over in 748), so the Abbasids declared an Imam in Shaizar as well. The leader of the Kharijites there was Abu Muhammad al-Qasim and he proclaimed that the Imam is al-Husayn ibn Ali, the son of the Prophet Muhammad.
Some sources say that the Abbasids declared Abu Hashim (i.e. al-Husayn) as the Imam of al-Hijaz in addition to Abu Hashim (i.e. al-Husayn), the son of the Prophet Muhammad.
Opinions of the different schools
The Kharjite school, which is also called the "Al-Kharijiyyah" and "Al-Kharijiyah" (the "People of Al-Husayn") is a school of thought founded by several individuals who advocated Kharjite beliefs and practices.
