Boxing gloves have been around since boxing was introduced thousands of years ago. Ancient Greek boxers used to wrap their hands in leather strips in order to protect them from injury and abrasion. Unfortunately, there was no padding in those gloves but just leather to protect the hands. Although many people think that boxing gloves are made to protect the other fighter, they also protect the fragile bones in your hand from injury. The padding on the gloves is to protect the person swinging the fist as it is to protect the one on the receiving side. 
Boxing changed drastically when the Romans adopted the game from the Greeks. It quickly transformed into a kind of a death game. Although the Romans maintained the strip of leather on the hands, they added metal studs and spikes to make the blows more lethal. That is why in ancient roman boxing matches, the loser either ended up dead or permanently maimed. This soon became illegal and boxing was banned in different roman cities. This ban remained for over a thousand years up until the western civilization. 
Boxing later reappeared in the 1600 but it was the bare-knuckle type of a game. Later, boxing gloves were introduced in the world. The aim was to come up with a glove that could protect boxers against injury and thus, early designers came up with gloves that had inner padding. The modern padded gloves were brought about by jack Broughton. Jack was a British boxing champion in the 1700s. Unfortunately, the padded boxing gloves of the 1700 were just used in informal boxing matches but in the mainstream, boxing was still done bare-knuckle. 
Soon, people started to die in these boxing matches and although boxing rules did not mention the use of boxing gloves, something had to be done. And even though activists were advocating for the use of boxing gloves, many boxers were reluctant to enter into the ring with them. As a result, boxing was again banned in different parts of the world. 
In 1866, john graham published the famous Queensbury rules in London. These rules are considered as the pioneers of the modern day boxing. Amongst other rules, the Queensbury rules required the use of boxing gloves in boxing matches. With these rules, bare knuckle boxing was gone from the most established boxing events in the world. The beginning of glove boxing happened in 1892 when gentleman Jim defeated John L. Sullivan in a championship match. Both of these guys were wearing padded gloves.  
Today good mma gloves are defined by weight. The heavier the boxing gloves, the safer they are for both fighters. This is not just because they are more padded, but because the fighters cannot swing their fists as fast as when wearing lighter gloves.
