Hacker group believed to be behind an infamous 2007 cyber attack that shut down several South Korean banks
PYONGYANG, North Korea (AP) – A cybersecurity expert says he’s confident that the hacking group that allegedly caused a crippling 2007 cyber attack in South Korea is operating from inside the North.
Oh Jung-hyun, a cybersecurity professor at Kookmin University in Seoul, said Tuesday that he based his findings on similarities between a malicious software known as “Geoworrior” used in the hack and malware belonging to the North’s leader, Kim Jong Un.
Some experts say Pyongyang is directly behind cyber attacks against South Korean targets because it lacks the technology or expertise to pull off such a sophisticated attack.
The North has denied those allegations.
Geoworrior also has similarities with a remote-control program known as “Skymind” used in the attack, Oh says.
Oh says he’s also noticed a coding pattern in an IP address of an organization that appears to be linked to the North.
He says one IP address is registered to a company in the North Korean capital, Pyongyang, and the other is registered in China.
South Korea’s cybersecurity agencies believe Pyongyang was behind the April 2007 attack, which forced several banks in the country to shut down.
Several South Korean companies that hold sensitive information belonging to the government or companies also had their computer systems taken down for a brief period of time.
The hackers also managed to steal confidential data belonging to the spy agency that analyzes North Korea’s military readiness.
The spy agency has yet to release a full report on what it found. The agency’s chief has told lawmakers that a hard drive was destroyed during the attack.
