Documents obtained by the newspaper Der Spiegel and first reported on by U.S. news service ProPublica show that the NSA's hacking operations have turned up data on Americans in the United States and overseas.
More than 1,000 pages of documents were provided to ProPublica by former AT&T technician Mark Klein, who took the material in response to demands by a federal judge last year. ProPublica said that the documents were intended to be secret because "they include sensitive information about people inside the United States." The documents "detail how NSA used technology to intercept emails, video chats, photos, and other communications, and how it shares that information with its foreign partners," says the newspaper.
The documents show that AT&T provided the NSA with the names and encryption keys used to decrypt both its Internet backbone communications and its voice-over-Internet protocol communications; the encryption keys are changed periodically. The company passed along account holder email addresses and names of certain "select" subscribers. In some cases, the company directed the NSA to file requests under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act for business records on its customers.
