Last month Google released the YouTube gadget, which featured a sidebar with links to all the video sites related to the Google family. The aim was to give users a single point of access to the vast YouTube catalog.
As soon as you click on it, YouTube takes over the screen, and the sidebar now only functions as an access point to all the Google related video sites, which include things like the Panoramio sharing site, Google Video, Gmail and Google+. The sidebar also includes a music player, and lately it has been integrated with the regular YouTube service, so that you can share videos on Google Buzz, Gtalk and the main blog as well.
Indeed, I really liked the idea of this gadget, and I hope that soon someone will create a similar one for the other Google related services, such as Google Calendar, Google Maps and Google AdSense. Still, even though it works as intended, I must admit that it would be really great to have a more complete interface, which will include other Google related services alongside the ones listed in the sidebar.
Nevertheless, the sidebar works perfectly fine even without Google Calendar, Google Maps and Google AdSense installed, so I am not sure if this is a major problem.
Even though the sidebar can be quite useful, it does not occupy any space on the desktop, so if you run out of room, you can just move the sidebar to one of the sides of the screen, and use it to get quick access to the most important services.
