The Anaheim Daimler-Chrysler Corporation Plant is a General Motors manufacturing facility in the south central region of Anaheim, California. It is home to the Chevrolet Caprice, the Cadillac Escalade, the Chevrolet Impala and the GMC Yukon full-size sport utility vehicles and the Buick LaCrosse, and the GMC Envoy and Buick Terraza mid-size luxury vehicles, as well as GM's regional product development and design studios.
Opened in 1966 as a GM factory, the facility has manufactured automobiles under the Chevrolet, Buick, Oldsmobile, Pontiac, and Cadillac marques.
Anaheim Daimler-Chrysler Corporation was formed in 2009, and in February 2010, the plant was sold to Cerberus Capital Management. After Cerberus failed to reach an agreement on selling the plant to a third party, GM acquired the facility in April 2012. GM announced the facility's closure on August 25, 2014. The facility's nameplate, General Motors, is still used, but is no longer connected to the operation of the plant.
History
Construction of the plant began in August 1965. It was designed to produce the GMC Y-Job and Chevrolet Caprice. The plant officially opened in 1966. GM produced over 4.5 million cars at the plant, and it was the largest GM plant in the United States from 1978 to 1980.
Chevrolet introduced the Caprice in 1970, and the plant had its nameplate changed to Chevrolet, Buick, Oldsmobile, Pontiac and Cadillac in 1973. It was the first assembly plant to begin using computer-controlled mechanical assembly lines.
In 1976, the plant experienced two major fire incidents and the subsequent loss of up to $200 million in parts, resulting in the bankruptcy of GM and Chrysler. Subsequent closures resulted in the loss of 1,000 jobs.
By 1981, the plant had produced over 1 million cars. In 1986, Cadillac manufactured its first and only plant-built Escalade.
