UseNeXT [Mac/Win]
In an effort to continue the fine work they did for Unix back in the 70’s, the FreeBSD Foundation is proud to announce the release of FreeBSD 10.0 – a new major release of the most popular UNIX® operating system for x86 and ARM® based machines.
As with the version 7 and 8 releases, FreeBSD 10 is an LTS release and not a major version number change. The upgrade path from 8.x and 9.x to 10 is as follows:
1) Upgrade to FreeBSD 9.3 as it is the version immediately before 10.
2) Upgrade to FreeBSD 9.4 (i.e. 9.3 with default settings). This version of 9.x is an LTS release like 10.x
3) Upgrade to FreeBSD 9.5.
4) Upgrade to FreeBSD 10.0.
While the upgrade from 9.x to 10.x is straightforward, many of the details around the upgrade to 9.4, as well as 9.5, have been altered to make the process smoother and less painful.
The FreeBSD 10 release schedule – with LTS releases for FreeBSD 10, 10.1, 10.2, 10.3, 10.4, and 10.5 – will mirror that of Linux and its version numbers, a decade after Linux's switch to version numbers based on exact 6-month releases. 10.0, 10.1, and 10.2 will be supported for 3 years each. Subsequent releases, 10.3, 10.4, and 10.5, are supported for 1 year each.
A few weeks ago, we announced that the next version of the FreeBSD operating system would be named FreeBSD 10.0. Since that time, we’ve talked with many people about the 10.0 release as well as the direction of the FreeBSD project and our future plans.
The FreeBSD Project has a very long history. When the first version of the FreeBSD operating system was released in 1992, we were sure that we were on the right track. We based our effort on the work of the earlier XFree86 project and used many of the same ideas to create the FreeBSD operating system.
While the first release of the FreeBSD operating system was a very successful effort, things were not the same in 1992 when the second FreeBSD release came out. Just a few months before the release, a major change was made to the entire design of the FreeBSD operating system. The new design brought
